Our neighborhood started a community garden. Anyone could sign up for a plot. My family took one. We were determined to grow vegetables. We had never done it before. We read books. We asked experienced gardeners for advice. The challenge was to keep the plants alive. We watered and weeded every week. We learned to appreciate how much work farming is. Our tradition became Saturday mornings at the garden. We met our neighbors there. We shared tips and seeds. The garden had a positive influence on our block. Kids played while parents worked. By summer we had tomatoes and beans. We felt a sense of responsibility to our plot. We had learned that a community can achieve more together. The garden was a success. We would do it again next year. We had discovered the joy of growing food. We had built something that would last. The community garden had changed how we saw our neighborhood. We were grateful to be part of it.
