Comparing Perspectives on One Event

Analyze how different people's positions shape their accounts of the same event.

People describe the same event differently depending on their role, interests, values, and what they could observe. Comparing perspectives helps you build a fuller picture and recognize how position shapes testimony. Worked example: a city closes a neighborhood library. The mayor's statement: 'This difficult decision allows us to fund a modern central library that will serve every resident. ' A longtime patron's letter: 'The only place my children could walk to after school is gone.

' A city budget report: 'Branch circulation fell 40 percent over five years while operating costs rose. ' Each account is partly true. The mayor emphasizes citywide benefits, the patron emphasizes local loss, and the report emphasizes numbers. To compare, ask for each: what does this person know firsthand? What do they emphasize or leave out? What do they gain or lose? Where do the accounts agree, and where do they conflict? Points of agreement are usually the most reliable; points of conflict show what is truly at stake.

• 1Position, interests, and values shape each account.
• 2Ask what each source knows, emphasizes, and omits.
• 3Agreement is reliable; conflict reveals what is at stake.
