The Two Layers of English: Germanic Core and Latinate Overlay

See why English often has a short everyday word and a longer formal word for the same idea.

English grew from Old English, a Germanic language, and later absorbed thousands of words from Latin, both directly and through French. The result is a layered vocabulary. Everyday, concrete words tend to be short and Germanic: eat, help, ask, begin, house. Formal and academic words tend to be longer and Latinate: consume, assist, inquire, commence, residence. Recognizing the layers helps you read and write. When a textbook says 'The organism ingests nutrients,' you can translate the Latinate verb into its plain partner: the organism eats food.

Going the other way, if your essay sounds too casual, swapping 'find out' for 'determine' lifts the register. Neither layer is better. Germanic words feel direct and vivid; Latinate words feel precise and impersonal. Skilled writers mix them on purpose.
