Keeping a Commonplace Book

Collect striking passages and your responses in a commonplace book to deepen and remember your reading.

A commonplace book is a personal notebook of quotations, ideas, and reflections gathered from reading. The practice goes back centuries; Renaissance students and scholars kept them to collect wisdom and useful phrasing, often organizing entries under headings. Today, a commonplace book can be a paper notebook or a digital document, but the method is the same: when a sentence strikes you, copy it out by hand or type it exactly, note the source, and add a line or two about why it mattered. Copying slows you down enough to notice how the sentence is built.

Over time, the collection becomes a portrait of your mind as a reader. You will notice patterns: maybe you keep saving lines about courage or about cities at night. Consider an original entry: a quoted sentence about a lighthouse keeper's loneliness, followed by 'This is how I felt the first month at my new school. ' The book connects literature to your own life, and it is a rich source when you write.
