Review: Reading Academic Words in Their Discipline

Combine discipline awareness and precise test vocabulary to read demanding texts accurately.

This track has trained two habits. First, notice the discipline. The same word can carry different meanings in science, math, economics, law, history, and literary study, so identify the field before you settle on a meaning. Second, read precise academic words as precise. Words such as corroborate, mitigate, ambivalent, and implicit each do a specific job, and swapping a near-synonym changes the claim. Worked example: 'The historian conceded that the letter was biased, but argued that its implicit assumptions corroborate other sources about the period.

' Field: history, so 'biased' means shaped by perspective, not worthless. Moves: concedes a weakness, then argues. Implicit: the assumptions are unstated but inferable. Corroborate: they support other evidence. Together the sentence says the letter, though one-sided, quietly confirms what other documents show. Reading it this precisely is what separates comprehension from a vague impression.

• 1Identify the discipline before choosing a meaning.
• 2Treat precise academic words as precise.
• 3Map each word's job to understand the full claim.
