The Hero's Journey and Its Variations

Trace the stages of the hero's journey and evaluate how stories adapt or reject the pattern.

The scholar Joseph Campbell described a pattern he found in myths worldwide, often called the hero's journey. In simplified form: the hero lives in an ordinary world, receives a call to adventure, may refuse it, meets a mentor, crosses a threshold into an unfamiliar world, faces trials, endures a central ordeal, gains a reward, and returns transformed, often bringing something of value home. Many novels and films follow this shape closely. Others alter it to make a point.

Picture a story in which a teenager answers the call, endures every trial, and returns home only to find that no one believes her and nothing has changed. By denying the triumphant return, the writer questions whether individual heroism can fix a community. When analyzing, map the stages, but focus on the departures: which stage is missing, reversed, or exaggerated? The departure is usually where the author's meaning lives.

• 2Many stories follow the pattern; others bend it.
• 3Departures from the pattern often reveal meaning.
