Frame Narratives: Stories Within Stories

Analyze how an outer story frames inner stories and shapes how readers judge them.

A frame narrative is an outer story that contains one or more inner stories. In One Thousand and One Nights, Scheherazade tells tales each night to postpone her execution, so every inner story is shadowed by the frame's life-or-death stakes. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, an explorer's letters frame Victor Frankenstein's account, which in turn frames the creature's own story. Frames do real work. They establish who is telling and why, which affects reliability. They can create distance, making a fantastic tale seem like a reported account.

And they invite comparison: the explorer's ambition mirrors Victor's, so the frame becomes a warning to its own narrator. When you analyze a frame, ask three questions. Who tells the inner story, and to whom? What does the teller want from the listener? How does the outer story change after hearing the inner one? Retelling such a work accurately means preserving the layers, not flattening it into one plot.

• 1A frame is an outer story containing inner stories.
• 2Frames shape reliability, distance, and comparison.
• 3Ask who tells, to whom, why, and what changes.
