Hedging and Qualifying Language

Recognize and use cautious language that makes claims more accurate.

Hedges and qualifiers are words that limit how strongly a claim is made: may, might, likely, tends to, suggests, arguably, in most cases, to some extent. In academic writing, they are signs of careful thinking, not weakness. Science especially depends on them, because evidence rarely proves something absolutely. Compare: 'Video games cause poor grades' with 'Some studies suggest that excessive gaming may be associated with lower grades.

' The second sentence is more accurate: 'some studies' limits the evidence base, 'suggest' admits uncertainty, 'excessive' narrows the claim, and 'associated with' avoids claiming cause. Worked example: when reading, notice hedges because they tell you how confident the writer actually is. A news headline that drops the hedges from a careful study can mislead. But too many hedges make writing evasive: 'It could perhaps possibly be somewhat true' says nothing. The skill is calibration, matching your confidence to your evidence.
