Latinate and Anglo-Saxon Diction

Choose between plain Germanic words and formal Latinate words for effect.

English often offers a plain word from Old English and a formal word from Latin or French for the same idea: start and commence, help and assist, buy and purchase, end and terminate, ask and request. Anglo-Saxon diction tends to feel direct, concrete, and emotionally strong. Latinate diction tends to feel formal, abstract, and detached. Neither is better; each has a purpose. Worked example: compare 'We will fight, and we will not give up' with 'We will engage in sustained resistance and will not capitulate. ' The first, almost entirely Germanic, sounds urgent and personal.

The second sounds like a report. A speechwriter seeking courage chooses the first. A legal document seeking precision might prefer the second. When you analyze rhetoric, notice which layer a writer favors at key moments. Many memorable speeches shift into short, Germanic words at their emotional climax, because those words feel closest to everyday experience.
