The Noble Gases

Lab Brief #7

🎯 Your mission

Understand the idea. Then look for it everywhere.

⚡ The twist

If it bubbles, something invisible is escaping.

What you'll learn

Group 0 elements have full outer shells, so they neither gain, lose nor share electrons under ordinary conditions. That inertness makes helium safe in balloons, argon useful for shielding welds, and neon suitable for discharge tubes.

Key words

noble gas
A Group 0 element with a full outer shell and very low reactivity.
inert
Chemically unreactive under normal conditions.

Make a hypothesis first

Guess: will the fizz be loud, soft, or none at all?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "noble gas" and "inert" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Research and tabulate one commercial use for each of helium, neon, argon and krypton, stating in each case which property of the gas the application depends on.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Noble gases are unreactive because they have:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Argon is used to shield welds because it is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🧪 If you could remove all the empty space from atoms, the entire human race would fit in a sugar cube.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
