Radioactive Decay

Lab Brief #1

🎯 Your mission

Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

An unstable nucleus emits radiation to become more stable. The process is spontaneous and random — you cannot predict when a particular nucleus will decay, only the rate for a large population. Nothing external speeds it up or slows it down.

Key words

radioactive decay
The spontaneous, random breakdown of an unstable nucleus.
nuclide
A specific type of nucleus, defined by its proton and neutron numbers.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

200 dice or coins
large tray
graph paper

⚠️ Safety first

Collect any dice that leave the tray at once — loose dice underfoot cause falls.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "radioactive decay" and "nuclide" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Model decay with 200 dice: roll them all, remove every six, and record the number remaining each round. Plot the count against round number and identify the curve's shape.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Radioactive decay is best described as:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Which factor changes the decay rate of a sample?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
