Uses and Dangers of Radiation

Lab Brief #4

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Radiation sterilises equipment, traces flow in pipes and the body, treats cancer and dates ancient material. It also ionises living tissue, damaging DNA and raising cancer risk. Dose limits, shielding, distance and time are the four controls.

Key words

irradiation
Exposure to radiation from an external source, which does not make the object radioactive.
contamination
Unwanted radioactive material getting onto or into an object or person.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "irradiation" and "contamination" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Research and tabulate four medical or industrial uses of radiation. For each, name the radiation type used, why that type suits the job, and the main protective measure taken for the operator.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Irradiation differs from contamination because irradiation:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Which is NOT one of the standard controls on radiation dose?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
