Recording Results in a Table

🧪Lab Brief #9

Engineering and Design.

🎯 Your mission

Run the experiment. Find out what really happens.

⚡ The twist

Constraints make you more creative, not less.

🤯

Mind = Blown

🌉 The Eiffel Tower can grow 6 inches taller in summer because metal expands when hot.

🔮

Make a hypothesis first

Before you test: how many tries until it works?

What You'll Learn

A results table has one column for what you changed and one for what you measured, each headed with its unit. Filling it in as you go rather than afterwards is what stops the numbers getting muddled.

Key Words

Tap a word to see its definition.

Materials Needed

  • ball
  • metre rule
  • notebook

Safety First

  • Drop the ball over a clear floor and stand back from the bounce.

Steps

Step 1Read

Read the explanation above and note the two key terms before you start.

Step 2Do

Drop a ball from five different heights and record bounce height in a table you draw first. Include a unit in every heading and take two repeats at each height.

Step 3Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.
