How Sound Reaches Your Ear

Lab Brief #11

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Every solution creates a new problem. That's good — that's the next project.

What you'll learn

A vibrating object pushes the air next to it, that air pushes the next layer, and the squeeze travels outward until it reaches your eardrum and makes it vibrate too. Nothing travels the whole way; only the disturbance does.

Key words

vibration
A rapid back-and-forth movement that starts a sound.
eardrum
The thin membrane in the ear that vibrates when a sound wave reaches it.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: which design will hold the most weight?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

bowl
cling film
rice
metal tray
wooden spoon

Get ready

⚠️ Safety first

Bang the tray away from ears and keep the noise brief.
Rice grains are a choking hazard for young children.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "vibration" and "eardrum" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Stretch cling film over a bowl, sprinkle rice on it, and bang a tray nearby. Watch the rice jump without anything touching it, then move further away and describe what changes.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Sound travels through air as a:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

The rice jumps because the cling film is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🚀 The Saturn V rocket burned 20 tons of fuel per second at liftoff.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
