A vibrating object pushes the air next to it, that air pushes the next layer, and the squeeze travels outward until it reaches your eardrum and makes it vibrate too. Nothing travels the whole way; only the disturbance does.

Safety First

Bang the tray away from ears and keep the noise brief.
Rice grains are a choking hazard for young children.

Steps

Step 1 — Read

Read the explanation above and note the two key terms before you start.

Stretch cling film over a bowl, sprinkle rice on it, and bang a tray nearby. Watch the rice jump without anything touching it, then move further away and describe what changes.

Step 3 — Observe
