Building Something That Has to Hold

🧪Lab Brief #14

Engineering and Design.

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Every solution creates a new problem. That's good — that's the next project.

🤯

Mind = Blown

🚀 The Saturn V rocket burned 20 tons of fuel per second at liftoff.

🔮

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: which design will hold the most weight?

What You'll Learn

Engineers test to destruction on purpose. Loading a structure until it fails tells you where the weak point is, which is the only reliable way to know what to strengthen next time.

Key Words

Tap a word to see its definition.

Materials Needed

  • straws
  • tape
  • book
  • ruler

Safety First

  • Keep fingers clear when the tower collapses and clear the desk edge first.

Steps

Step 1Read

Read the explanation above and note the two key terms before you start.

Step 2Do

Build a tower from twenty straws and tape that must hold a book 20 cm above the desk. Test it, note exactly where it buckles, rebuild with the same materials, and test again.

Step 3Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Testing a structure to failure tells you:

🌍

Where you see this in real life

Every bridge, building, and gadget you've ever used started with this.

🏆

Stretch Challenge

Try this in real life this week.

Find something that's broken at home and try to figure out *why* it broke.

👨‍👩‍👧

For the dinner table

What's something around the house you'd redesign — and how?
