Rivers Carry More Than Water

Lab Brief #11

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

The slowest changes are the biggest ones.

What you'll learn

A fast river picks up and carries sand, silt and even boulders. When it slows at a bend or a river mouth it drops the heaviest load first, which is how sandbanks, beaches and deltas are built.

Key words

transport
The carrying of eroded material by water, wind or ice.
deposition
The dropping of carried material when the water slows down.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: which will erode faster?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

tray
sand
jug
water
camera

Get ready

⚠️ Safety first

Mop spills at once — wet floors are a slip hazard.
Wash hands after handling sand.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "transport" and "deposition" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Tilt a tray of sand and pour water from a jug at the top, first slowly and then fast. Photograph the channel each time and mark where material was picked up and where it was dropped.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A river drops its heaviest load when it:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

The building of a delta is an example of:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🪨 Every grain of sand on every beach used to be a mountain.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Find a rock outside and try to guess how old it is.
