Choosing the Right Measuring Tool

Lab Brief #4

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Every solution creates a new problem. That's good — that's the next project.

What you'll learn

Each tool measures one quantity to one level of detail. A ruler gives length to the millimetre, a measuring cylinder gives volume, a balance gives mass and a thermometer gives temperature. Using the wrong one gives a number that answers nothing.

Key words

measuring cylinder
A tall marked container used to measure the volume of a liquid.
balance
An instrument that measures the mass of an object.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: which design will hold the most weight?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

⚠️ Safety first

Check glassware for chips before you use it.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "measuring cylinder" and "balance" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Set up a station with five objects and five tools. For each object, choose the right tool, take the measurement, and write the number with its unit. Swap with a partner and check the units.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

To find the volume of a liquid you would use a:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Every measurement must be written with its:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🚀 The Saturn V rocket burned 20 tons of fuel per second at liftoff.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
