Protecting a Local Habitat

Lab Brief #7

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Conservation works best when it is specific: name the species, name the threat, and name the action. "Protect nature" changes nothing; "leave a strip of long grass uncut through summer so pollinators can feed" changes something measurable.

Key words

conservation
Protecting habitats and species so they survive.
pollinator
An animal such as a bee that carries pollen between flowers.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

notebook
stopwatch
hand lens

⚠️ Safety first

Watch insects, do not handle them — some sting.
Tell an adult before working outside and stay in sight.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "conservation" and "pollinator" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Survey one patch of school or garden ground for pollinators over ten minutes on three different days. Propose one specific change and predict, with a number, how the count would respond.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A useful conservation action is one that is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Leaving grass uncut through summer mainly helps:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
