Types of Symbiosis

Lab Brief #2

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

What the body does in one minute is wilder than any cartoon.

What you'll learn

Symbiosis is a close relationship between two different species. In mutualism, both benefit; in parasitism, one benefits while the other is harmed; in commensalism, one benefits and the other is unaffected.

Key words

symbiosis
When two different living things live closely together.
mutualism
When two living things help each other and both benefit.
parasitism
When one living thing feeds on another and harms it.

Make a hypothesis first

Guess: how does the body solve this problem?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 3 · Read

Look at the vocabulary words and write a definition for each in your own words.

Step 2 of 3 · Observe

Watch carefully for any changes and note the time.

Step 3 of 3 · Record

Create a data table to organize your measurements.

Question 1 of 3

In mutualism, the two species:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

A tick feeding on a dog is an example of:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

🌍 Where you see this in real life: This is why plants grow toward windows and why scabs form.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Watch a plant or pet for 5 minutes today and write down what you noticed.

👨‍👩‍👧 For the dinner table: “Tell me something you noticed about your own body today.”
