Temperature and Particle Motion

Lab Brief #2

🎯 Your mission

Learn the rule. Then catch nature using it.

⚡ The twist

If it bubbles, something invisible is escaping.

What you'll learn

Temperature measures how fast particles are moving. At absolute zero, particles have the least possible energy. Heating matter increases particle motion and can cause state changes.

Key words

reactant
A substance that changes during a chemical reaction.
conservation of mass
Matter is never made or destroyed, only changed in a reaction.

Make a hypothesis first

Guess: will the fizz be loud, soft, or none at all?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Look at the vocabulary words and write a definition for each in your own words.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Heat ice and record the temperature every minute as it melts and then boils. Graph the temperature changes and label each phase change.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Use your senses (except taste) to describe what you notice.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a summary of your findings in 3-5 sentences.

Question 1 of 3

What happens to particle motion when matter is heated?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

Which state of matter has a definite shape and volume?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Which state of matter fills its entire container?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

💧 Hot water can freeze faster than cold water under the right conditions. Nobody fully understands why.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.
