Space Junk and Orbits We Have to Share

Lab Brief #12

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Up there, the rules of down here stop working.

What you'll learn

Tens of thousands of trackable fragments now orbit Earth at speeds near 8 km/s, where even a paint fleck can hole a spacecraft. Every launch has to plan around them, and collisions create more debris, which is why the problem compounds.

Key words

orbital debris
Fragments of spent rockets and satellites left in orbit.
collision cascade
The process by which each collision creates debris that causes further collisions.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: what would happen on the moon vs. on Earth?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "orbital debris" and "collision cascade" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Research how many trackable objects are in low Earth orbit today. Sketch a cascade diagram showing how one collision produces further collisions, and write one mitigation each for launchers and satellite operators.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Small debris is dangerous mainly because of its:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

A collision cascade happens because each collision:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🌟 The light from the closest star (after the sun) takes 4 years to reach you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.

🌍 Where you see this in real life: GPS, weather forecasts, and the seasons all rely on this.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Find a constellation in the sky. Look it up. Tell someone its story.
