What You'll Learn

Minerals are naturally occurring, inorganic solids with a crystalline structure and definite chemical composition. Minerals are identified by hardness, luster, color, streak, and cleavage.

  • Have an adult check your set-up before you start, and tidy everything away afterwards.

Steps

Step 1Read

Look at the vocabulary words and write a definition for each in your own words.

Step 2Do

Test rock hardness using Mohs scale: try scratching rocks with your fingernail, a penny, and a nail. Rank them from softest to hardest.

Step 3Observe

Watch carefully for any changes and note the time.

Step 4Record

Create a data table to organize your measurements.
