Trade-offs in Design

Lab Brief #6

🎯 Your mission

Understand the idea. Then look for it everywhere.

⚡ The twist

Constraints make you more creative, not less.

What you'll learn

Almost no design maximises everything at once. Making a bike frame lighter usually makes it weaker or more expensive. Engineers name the trade-off explicitly and choose deliberately rather than pretending it does not exist.

Key words

trade-off
An unavoidable exchange where improving one property worsens another.
constraint
A limit on the solution, such as cost, time, materials or size.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you test: how many tries until it works?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "trade-off" and "constraint" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Design a lunchbox for a named user under three constraints: under £8, insulates for four hours, fits a school bag. Write down which two properties you traded against each other and why.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A trade-off means improving one property usually:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Cost, time and available materials are examples of:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🛠️ The first computer bug was a literal moth stuck inside a machine in 1947.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.

✨ More to explore

🌍 Where you see this in real life: Your phone, your bike, your shoes — all designed with this idea.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Build something — anything — out of stuff in your recycling bin.
