Microscopes and Magnification

Lab Brief #3

🎯 Your mission

Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Total magnification is the eyepiece lens multiplied by the objective lens, so a ×10 eyepiece with a ×40 objective gives ×400. Magnification makes an image bigger; resolution decides whether the extra size shows any new detail.

Key words

magnification
How many times larger an image is than the real object.
resolution
The smallest separation at which two points still appear distinct.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

microscope
prepared slides
notebook

⚠️ Safety first

Carry a microscope with two hands and rack the objective away from the slide before focusing.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "magnification" and "resolution" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

View a prepared slide at three objective settings and calculate the total magnification for each. Draw the same feature at each setting and note the point where extra magnification stops revealing new detail.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A ×10 eyepiece with a ×40 objective gives a total magnification of:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Making an image bigger without revealing more detail is a limit of:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
