Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — in That Order

Lab Brief #6

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

The three are ranked, not equal. Reducing avoids the material entirely, reusing avoids reprocessing, and recycling still costs energy and loses quality each cycle. Treating recycling as the first answer misses the two larger savings.

Key words

reuse
Using an item again for the same or a new purpose without reprocessing.
downcycling
Recycling that produces a lower-grade material than the original.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

kitchen scale
gloves
notebook

⚠️ Safety first

Wear gloves for waste sorting and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
Do not handle sharp items, broken glass or food waste.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "reuse" and "downcycling" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Audit one day of your household's waste by category and mass. For the three largest categories, write one realistic reduce action, one reuse action and one recycle action, then rank them by mass saved.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Which saves the most material?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Recycling that yields a lower-grade material is called:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
