Writing a Conclusion That the Data Supports

Lab Brief #4

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

A conclusion states what was found, how confident you are, and what it does not show. Overclaiming — turning a small correlation into a law — is the fault examiners and reviewers catch most often.

Key words

overclaiming
Stating a conclusion stronger than the evidence supports.
limitation
A stated weakness that bounds what the results can show.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "overclaiming" and "limitation" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Take a supplied data set with a weak trend and write three conclusions: one that overclaims, one that underclaims, and one that is properly bounded. Explain what makes the third correct.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A good conclusion states findings, confidence and:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Turning a weak correlation into a stated law is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
