Estimating to Check an Answer

Lab Brief #6

🎯 Your mission

Understand the idea. Then look for it everywhere.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Before trusting a calculated result, estimate it roughly in your head. If the calculator says a person's mass is 7,000 kg, the arithmetic is wrong, and a five-second estimate catches what a careful recalculation might not.

Key words

order of magnitude
The rough size of a number, to the nearest power of ten.
sanity check
A quick rough estimate used to test whether a result is plausible.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "order of magnitude" and "sanity check" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Estimate five quantities to the nearest power of ten before calculating them — the mass of a full backpack, the number of breaths you take in a day, the litres in a bath. Compare each estimate with the calculation.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A sanity check is used to:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

An order-of-magnitude estimate gives the answer to the nearest:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
