Homeostasis and Internal Balance

Lab Brief #11

🎯 Your mission

Run the experiment. Find out what really happens.

⚡ The twist

What the body does in one minute is wilder than any cartoon.

What you'll learn

Homeostasis is how living things keep their internal conditions stable even when the outside environment changes. For example, when you become too hot, your body sweats to cool down and return to its normal temperature.

Key words

cell
The tiny building block that makes up all living things.
DNA
The tiny code inside living things that tells them how to grow.

Make a hypothesis first

Guess: how does the body solve this problem?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

water

⚠️ Safety first

Never look directly at the Sun or into a laser, even briefly.
Mop up spills straight away so nobody slips, and keep liquids away from sockets.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Look at the vocabulary words and write a definition for each in your own words.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Design a controlled experiment: grow plants under different light conditions (full sun, partial shade, no light). Water equally and measure growth daily for one week.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Use your senses (except taste) to describe what you notice.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a summary of your findings in 3-5 sentences.

Question 1 of 3

Homeostasis means keeping internal conditions:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

When you get too hot, your body:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Shivering when cold helps the body:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🦠 You have more bacterial cells in your body than human cells.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.

✨ More to explore

🌍 Where you see this in real life: Your own body is doing this thousands of times every second.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Find one thing about your body that's different from a friend's. Wonder why.

👨‍👩‍👧 For the dinner table: “Tell me something you noticed about your own body today.”
