Reading a Sustainability Trade-off

Lab Brief #3

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Every solution creates a new problem. That's good — that's the next project.

What you'll learn

Almost every environmental choice trades one harm against another. Biofuel cuts fossil carbon but competes with food crops for land; hydroelectricity is clean to run but floods valleys. Naming the trade-off is the analysis.

Key words

trade-off
An exchange in which reducing one harm increases another.
unintended consequence
An effect of a decision that was not part of its purpose.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: which design will hold the most weight?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "trade-off" and "unintended consequence" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Take three green technologies and, for each, write the benefit, the trade-off and one group of people affected. Then rank them for a country with lots of land but little water.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Growing biofuel crops competes most directly with:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

An unintended consequence is an effect that was:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🌉 The Eiffel Tower can grow 6 inches taller in summer because metal expands when hot.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
