Safety Factors in Engineering

Lab Brief #5

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Constraints make you more creative, not less.

What you'll learn

Engineers design structures to carry several times the load they will ever meet, because materials vary, loads are uncertain and failure is expensive. A safety factor of four means the design would survive four times its rated load.

Key words

safety factor
The ratio of the load a design can survive to the load it is rated for.
failure load
The load at which a structure actually breaks.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you test: how many tries until it works?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

⚠️ Safety first

Load over a padded surface with feet clear, and stand back as failure approaches.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "safety factor" and "failure load" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Load identical paper beams to destruction and record the failure load for five samples. Take the lowest, divide by four, and state the rated load you would publish for that design.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A safety factor of four means the structure should survive:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

The rated load is set from the:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
