Structure Fits Function Everywhere

Lab Brief #13

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

A root hair is long and thin, an alveolus is thin-walled and folded, a radiator has fins. All three maximise surface area, because in every case the job is exchange across a boundary. Read the shape and you can often infer the job.

Key words

surface area
The total area of a boundary across which exchange can happen.
adaptation
A feature that suits a structure to the job it does.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

🧰 What you need

structure diagram cards
notebook

⚠️ Safety first

Have an adult check your set-up before you start, and tidy everything away afterwards.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "surface area" and "adaptation" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Given six unlabelled structures from biology and engineering, infer each one's function from its shape alone. Then check your answers and note which shape features were most informative.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Folded, thin-walled structures usually indicate a job involving:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Root hairs and alveoli share the same design goal of maximising:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
