Scale Changes What Matters

Lab Brief #15

🎯 Your mission

Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

An ant can carry many times its own weight and fall from any height unharmed; an elephant can do neither. Strength scales with area but weight scales with volume, so as size grows, weight outruns strength.

Key words

scaling
How a property changes as an object's size changes.
square-cube law
Area grows with the square of length while volume grows with the cube.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

centimetre cubes
calculator
notebook

⚠️ Safety first

Small cubes are a choking hazard — keep them away from young children.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "scaling" and "square-cube law" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Build cubes of side 1, 2 and 3 units from centimetre blocks. Calculate surface area and volume for each, tabulate the ratio, and use it to explain why large animals need proportionally thicker legs.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Doubling an object's length multiplies its volume by:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Large animals need proportionally thicker legs because weight grows faster than:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
