Clues to Past Climate

Lab Brief #1

🎯 Your mission

Understand the idea. Then look for it everywhere.

⚡ The twist

Living things break the rules of non-living things — find the rule they break.

What you'll learn

Climate data from ice cores, tree rings, and ocean sediments helps scientists understand past climate patterns and predict future changes.

Key words

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: what will happen to the plant if you change the water?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 3 · Read

Look at the vocabulary words and write a definition for each in your own words.

Step 2 of 3 · Observe

Look for patterns in your observations.

Step 3 of 3 · Record

Make a graph or chart showing your results.

Question 1 of 3

Which is a source of past-climate data?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

Tree rings can show past climate because ring width depends on:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Air bubbles trapped in ice cores record:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🦠 You have more bacterial cells in your body than human cells.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.

🎯

We'll pick an experiment that matches exactly how you're thinking right now.

✨ More to explore

🌍 Where you see this in real life: Your own body is doing this thousands of times every second.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Find one thing about your body that's different from a friend's. Wonder why.

👨‍👩‍👧 For the dinner table: “Tell me something you noticed about your own body today.”

Send it to a parent who's looking for a 10-minute kitchen science win.
