Interpreting Risk

Lab Brief #4

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

A risk that doubles sounds alarming until you know the starting figure: doubling a one-in-a-million chance is still one in five hundred thousand. Relative risk without absolute risk is one of the commonest ways statistics mislead.

Key words

absolute risk
The actual chance of an outcome, such as 2 in 10,000.
relative risk
How much a risk changes compared with a baseline, such as 'doubled'.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "absolute risk" and "relative risk" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Take three real health headlines quoting relative risk. Find the absolute figures behind each and rewrite the headline honestly, then state which of the three was genuinely worth acting on.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A headline saying a risk 'doubles' is uninformative without:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Doubling a one-in-a-million risk gives:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
