Echo Sounding and Ultrasound Imaging

Lab Brief #8

🎯 Your mission

Understand the idea. Then look for it everywhere.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Send a pulse, time the echo, and distance is speed times half the round-trip time. Ships map the seabed this way and scanners image a fetus, because ultrasound reflects at boundaries between tissues without ionising anything.

Key words

echo sounding
Finding distance by timing a reflected pulse.
ultrasound
Sound above about 20 kHz, used for imaging because it does not ionise tissue.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "echo sounding" and "ultrasound" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Calculate seabed depth from a 0.24 s echo at 1,500 m/s, then design a labelled diagram showing how a scanner builds an image from reflections at several tissue boundaries.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

An echo returns after 0.24 s in water at 1,500 m/s. The depth is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Ultrasound is preferred over X-rays for imaging a fetus because it is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
