Weather Is Not Climate, and the Tails Move Most

Lab Brief #4

🎯 Your mission

Learn the rule. Then catch nature using it.

⚡ The twist

Weather isn't random — it's just complicated.

What you'll learn

Climate is the statistics of weather over decades, so one cold winter disproves a warming trend no more than one tall pupil disproves an average height. What a warming climate changes is the whole distribution: shift the mean of a bell curve a little to the right and record heat becomes dramatically more common while record cold becomes rarer, because the change at the tails is proportionally far larger than the change at the middle.

Key words

climate
The statistical description of weather over decades, including its averages and its extremes.
distribution
The full spread of values a variable takes, whose tails shift far more than its mean when the mean moves

Make a hypothesis first

Before you observe: what shape will it leave?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "climate" and "distribution" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Plot 30 years of local July maximum temperatures as a frequency distribution, then plot the most recent 30 years on the same axes. Count how many days exceeded a fixed threshold in each period and compare that change with the change in the means.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

A single cold winter does not disprove a warming climate because climate is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

When the mean of a temperature distribution shifts slightly, the largest proportional change occurs:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Climate is distinguished from weather mainly by:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🌊 The deepest part of the ocean is deeper than Mount Everest is tall.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.
