Anomalies Are Investigated, Not Deleted

Lab Brief #5

🎯 Your mission

Run the experiment. Find out what really happens.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

A reading far from its neighbours is a signal that something happened, not a licence to remove a point. The correct response is to repeat that measurement: if the value recurs it is data and the explanation lies in the system, and if it does not, you record that you excluded it and state why. Quietly dropping inconvenient points is exactly how a mistaken result comes to look beautifully consistent, and it is undetectable from the final graph alone.

Key words

anomaly
A reading that lies far from the pattern of its neighbours and must be repeated before any decision is made.
repeatability
Whether the same measurement gives the same value when taken again under the same conditions.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

pendulum
stopwatch
clamp stand
graph paper

⚠️ Safety first

Clamp the stand to the bench so it cannot topple.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "anomaly" and "repeatability" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Take ten timings of a pendulum, one of them deliberately mistimed, and plot all ten. Repeat the anomalous trial three times, then write the two sentences a lab book should contain about whether it was kept or excluded and why.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

The correct first response to an anomalous reading is to:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

If an anomaly recurs on repetition, it should be treated as:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Excluding a point is acceptable only if you also:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.
