What You'll Learn
Engineers design structures to carry several times the load they will ever meet, because materials vary, loads are uncertain and failure is expensive. A safety factor of four means the design would survive four times its rated load.

- Load over a padded surface with feet clear, and stand back as failure approaches.
Steps
Read the explanation above and note the two key terms before you start.
Load identical paper beams to destruction and record the failure load for five samples. Take the lowest, divide by four, and state the rated load you would publish for that design.
Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.
