Iteration: the Value of a Cheap Failure

Lab Brief #1

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Every solution creates a new problem. That's good — that's the next project.

What you'll learn

A design process is a loop rather than a line: define the criteria, build the cheapest thing that could fail informatively, test it, change one thing and test again. The value of an early prototype is information per unit cost, which is why the first version is deliberately crude — a model too solid to fail teaches nothing about the design that eventually will. Changing one variable per iteration is what makes the result attributable rather than merely better.

Key words

prototype
An early, deliberately cheap version built to be tested and to fail informatively.
iteration
One pass through the build-test-revise loop, in which a single change is made and evaluated.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: which design will hold the most weight?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "prototype" and "iteration" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Build a paper tower that must hold a tennis ball 30 cm up, then run four timed iterations, changing exactly one thing each time and recording the load it held. Plot load against iteration and name the single change that gave the largest gain.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

A first prototype should be cheap mainly so that:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

Changing only one thing per iteration makes the result:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

A design process is best described as:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.
