Proxy Records and the Resolution They Offer

Lab Brief #1

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

What the body does in one minute is wilder than any cartoon.

What you'll learn

Ice cores trap bubbles of genuinely ancient air, giving direct carbon dioxide measurements back 800,000 years. Tree rings and ocean sediments are indirect and must be calibrated against instrument records over the period where the two overlap. Every proxy also has a resolution — annual for tree rings, decadal or worse for deep sediment — and reporting that resolution is part of reporting the result, because a record that averages over fifty years cannot show a ten-year event.

Key words

proxy data
An indirect record of past conditions, such as tree rings or sediment layers, calibrated against direct measurements.
resolution
The finest time interval a record can distinguish, which sets what events it can and cannot show.

Make a hypothesis first

Guess: how does the body solve this problem?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "proxy data" and "resolution" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Count and measure the rings on a tree-trunk section or printout, tabulating width by year. Identify the narrowest and widest years, then explain what a sediment record averaging fifty years would miss about the same period.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

Ice cores give direct measurements of past carbon dioxide because they trap:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

A proxy with fifty-year resolution cannot show:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Proxies must be calibrated against:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.

🌍 Where you see this in real life: This is why plants grow toward windows and why scabs form.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Watch a plant or pet for 5 minutes today and write down what you noticed.
