Nebulae: Where Stars Are Born

Lab Brief #2

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Up there, the rules of down here stop working.

What you'll learn

Nebulae are clouds of gas and dust in space where new stars are born. When gravity causes a nebula to collapse, it heats up and nuclear fusion begins, forming a star.

Key words

nebula
A cloud of gas and dust in space, dense enough that gravity can collapse parts of it into stars.
nuclear fusion
The joining of light nuclei under extreme pressure and temperature, releasing the energy that makes a star shine.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: what would happen on the moon vs. on Earth?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

dry rice
funnel
clear jar

⚠️ Safety first

Keep the rice out of eyes and mouths, and sweep up spilled grains so nobody slips.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "nebula" and "nuclear fusion" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Model gravitational collapse by releasing a loose handful of dry rice onto a funnel and recording how the spread-out grains concentrate. Then research the core temperature at which hydrogen fusion begins and explain what supplies that heat in a collapsing nebula.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

A star begins to shine when its collapsing core becomes hot enough for:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

What causes a nebula to start collapsing?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

The energy released as a nebula collapses first appears as:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🪐 A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.
