The Habitable Zone

Lab Brief #9

🎯 Your mission

Learn the rule. Then catch nature using it.

⚡ The twist

Gravity is invisible — but it shapes everything.

What you'll learn

The habitable zone is the band of orbits where a planet's temperature could allow liquid water. Its position depends on the star's output, and being inside it is necessary but nowhere near sufficient — atmosphere and magnetic field matter too.

Key words

habitable zone
The band of orbits around a star where surface temperatures could allow liquid water.
exoplanet
A planet orbiting a star other than the Sun.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you check: which is closer?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "habitable zone" and "exoplanet" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Sketch the habitable zone for three stars of different output — a dim red dwarf, a Sun-like star and a bright giant — placing the zone at the correct relative distance in each. Then mark Venus and Mars on the Sun's diagram and explain why one is far too hot despite its position.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

The habitable zone is defined by the possibility of:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

A brighter star's habitable zone lies:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Being in the habitable zone is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🌟 The light from the closest star (after the sun) takes 4 years to reach you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.
