The Electromagnetic Spectrum Ordered by Photon Energy

Lab Brief #5

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Every electromagnetic wave travels at 3 × 10⁸ m/s in a vacuum, so v = fλ makes the seven named bands one continuous scale: as frequency rises, wavelength shortens and the energy carried by each photon rises with it. The ionising threshold sits in the ultraviolet. Below it, no increase in brightness will break a chemical bond, because the energy arrives in packets that are individually too small; above it, even a faint beam can damage DNA one photon at a time.

Key words

photon
A single packet of electromagnetic energy, whose energy rises with the frequency of the wave.
ionising radiation
Radiation whose photons carry enough energy to strip electrons from atoms and damage DNA.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "photon" and "ionising radiation" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Lay the seven bands out as a scale strip on a long roll of paper, writing the typical wavelength and frequency of each and marking where the ionising threshold falls. Then place ten everyday sources — remote control, microwave oven, sunbed, dental X-ray — on the strip and shade the ionising half.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

All electromagnetic waves in a vacuum share the same:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

A very bright red lamp still cannot ionise atoms because:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

As frequency rises across the spectrum, photon energy:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.
