Distance, Displacement, and Why They Differ

Lab Brief #1

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Distance is the total path length travelled; displacement is the straight-line vector from start to finish. Run one lap of a 400 m track and your distance is 400 m but your displacement is zero, because you ended where you began.

Key words

distance
The total length of the path travelled, with no direction attached.
displacement
The straight-line change in position from start to finish, including direction.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

tape measure
chalk or masking tape
notebook

⚠️ Safety first

Walk, don't run — check the floor is clear before you start.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "distance" and "displacement" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Walk a rectangle 6 m by 4 m in your yard or hallway, counting paces. Record the total distance walked and then measure the straight line from your start point to your end point. Repeat, stopping at each corner, and tabulate distance against displacement.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A runner completes exactly one lap of a 400 m track. What is her displacement?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Which quantity must always include a direction?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
