Frames of Reference and Relative Velocity

Lab Brief #9

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

All velocity is measured relative to something. Walk forwards at 1 m/s along a train moving at 30 m/s and your velocity is 1 m/s relative to the carriage but 31 m/s relative to the ground. Neither number is more correct — you must state the frame.

Key words

frame of reference
The object or coordinate system that motion is measured against.
relative velocity
The velocity of one object as measured from another.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "frame of reference" and "relative velocity" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Walk at a steady pace along a moving walkway or up a down-escalator if you can find one safely. Time yourself relative to the floor and relative to the belt, and reconcile the two figures by vector addition.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

You walk at 1 m/s along a train moving at 30 m/s. Your velocity relative to the ground is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

A velocity measurement is meaningless without stating:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
