Thermal Expansion

Lab Brief #6

🎯 Your mission

Run the experiment. Find out what really happens.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Most materials expand when heated because particles vibrate further apart. Engineers allow for it with expansion joints in bridges and gaps in rails. Water is the famous exception below 4 °C, expanding as it freezes, which is why ice floats and pipes burst.

Key words

thermal expansion
The increase in size of a material when its temperature rises.
expansion joint
A deliberate gap that lets a structure expand without buckling.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

ball and ring apparatus
Bunsen burner or hot water
tongs
heatproof mat

Get ready

⚠️ Safety first

Metal stays hot long after it stops glowing — always use tongs.
Work on a heatproof mat with an adult present.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "thermal expansion" and "expansion joint" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Pass a metal ball through a ring at room temperature, heat the ball, and try again. Then heat the ring instead. Record both results and explain why the hole in the ring gets larger, not smaller.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Heating a metal ring with a hole in it makes the hole:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Water is unusual because between 0 °C and 4 °C it:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
