What You'll Learn
In a transverse wave the oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of travel — light and water ripples. In a longitudinal wave it is parallel, producing compressions and rarefactions — sound is the everyday example.

- Hold both ends firmly — a released slinky can snap back into a face.
Steps
Read the explanation above and note the two key terms before you start.
Send both wave types along a stretched slinky: flick it sideways for transverse, push and pull along its length for longitudinal. Sketch each and mark the direction of oscillation against the direction of travel.
Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.
Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.
