The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Lab Brief #5

🎯 Your mission

Understand the idea. Then look for it everywhere.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

All electromagnetic waves are transverse and travel at 3 × 10⁸ m/s in a vacuum. From radio through microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet and X-ray to gamma, frequency and photon energy rise while wavelength falls — and so does the hazard.

Key words

electromagnetic spectrum
The full range of electromagnetic waves, ordered by frequency.
ionising radiation
Radiation energetic enough to remove electrons from atoms, such as UV, X-ray and gamma.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "electromagnetic spectrum" and "ionising radiation" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Build a scaled wall chart of the spectrum on a logarithmic axis, marking one real application and one hazard for each band. Place a household example on each — remote control, microwave oven, sunbed, dental X-ray.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Which has the shortest wavelength?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

All electromagnetic waves in a vacuum share the same:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
