Sink or Float Fun

Lab Brief #5

🎯 Your mission

Learn the rule. Then catch nature using it.

⚡ The twist

Color changes mean atoms are rearranging — even if you can't see them.

What you'll learn

Some things sink in water and some things float. Try putting different objects in a tub of water to see what happens!

Key words · 1 of 2

water
A clear liquid made of hydrogen and oxygen that living things need.
sink
To go down and settle below the surface of a liquid.

Key words · 2 of 2

float
To rest or stay on top of water or air without sinking.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you mix: what color do you think it'll turn?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Say the vocabulary words out loud. Can you repeat them?

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Drop a rock and a feather into water. Which one sinks? Which one floats?

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Draw a picture of what you see.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Share what you learned with someone!

Question 1 of 3

Does a rock sink in water?

Question 2 of 3

Does a feather float in water?

Question 3 of 3

Does wood float in water?

Mind = blown

🌈 Every color you see is your brain inventing a translation of light frequencies.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.

🌍 Where you see this in real life: Your toothpaste, your soap, even your breakfast involves this.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Ask a grown-up to help you mix two safe kitchen things. Predict what will happen first.

👨‍👩‍👧 For the dinner table: “What's something we cook that mixes things together this way?”
