1794: When Paris Abolished Slavery

The Haitian and French Revolutions shaped each other. In 1792 France granted equal rights to free people of color. In August 1793, facing invasion and needing soldiers, the French commissioner Léger-Félicité Sonthonax declared emancipation in the north of Saint-Domingue. On 4 February 1794 (16 Pluviôse Year II), the National Convention abolished slavery in all French colonies, after receiving a delegation from Saint-Domingue that included a Black deputy, Jean-Baptiste Belley.

Historians debate why: some stress revolutionary ideals of universal rights, others the practical need to win the war against Britain and Spain. Most conclude both mattered, and that the enslaved had forced the issue by revolting. This sequence shows that influence ran both ways across the Atlantic: the French Revolution created openings in the colony, and events in the colony pushed Paris to act on its own principles.
