Violence and Its Meanings: Haiti in Comparison

Haiti's revolution is often described as exceptionally violent, but comparison shows why that label must be used carefully. Slavery in Saint-Domingue was itself violent, sustained by punishment and high death rates. The war that followed involved atrocities by all sides: planters and French forces carried out harsh reprisals, and Leclerc's successor, Rochambeau, became notorious for brutality. Revolutionary forces also killed civilians, including in 1804.

The French Revolution's Terror and the Vendée, Spanish American wars of 'war to the death', and Russia's civil war all involved mass killing too. Historians such as Laurent Dubois argue that outsiders, especially in slaveholding societies, emphasized Haitian violence to warn against emancipation, while downplaying violence used to defend slavery. Weighing violence fairly means asking who committed it, against whom, in what context, and how it has been remembered.
